“We received a call about a young individual creating a disturbance at Christian Aguilera around 9:45 this afternoon,” said Chief Sean Silibich in an emergency press conference. “Upon arriving, we found the suspect on the playground engaged in illegal reading.”
Perceiving the threat, officers drew their weapons and demanded the child to drop the copy of “The ABCs of Black History” from behind their vehicles. But the child pretended not to hear them through her headphones while his back was turned.
“After several attempts to make contact, officers attempted to approach,” said Silibich. “That’s when the suspect moved for their pocket, and the officers took action.”
Officers opened fire as other potential suspects ran away from the scene. Police made sure to take down some of those attempting to flee.
“In total, officers fired 98 rounds,” he said. “Most only used one magazine at the scene, though one of our hero officers used four to neutralize the main suspect and some additional ones leaving the scene. The officer will be named for his bravery at his award ceremony next week.”
Before attempting to reach out to the parents of the child for comment, police notified the crowd that the parents of the child had been neutralized as well for providing the child with the illegal material.
Governor Ron DeSantis is expected to hold his own press conference later today to recognize the officers involved.
